Public speaking is a common phobia, and it becomes even more challenging when you’re giving an interview. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to calm your anxiety and prepare for an interview so you come across like a pro.
I worked with Udemy to create this media training infographic offering 33 tips that will teach you how to be confident, relaxed, and ready to answer any questions that come your way.
In addition to the infographic, here are some bonus tips:
Prepping Before the Interview
Prior to the interview, practice by yourself and face your fears. Record yourself on your phone or webcam, and conduct rapid-fire mock interviews with a colleague.
Prepare not just an FAQ but also a list of Should Ask Questions (SAQs) that can guide a reporter new to their beat or an interviewer who may still be looking for a good story hook. It’s aa good idea to thoroughly research the media outlet or blog that’s interviewing you so you can tailor your messages to their audience.
Remain Calm During the Interview
By having the right responses and bridging statements ready, you’ll be able to remain calm even when tough questions come up.
Remember that the interview isn’t advertising. Reporters and influencers like to inform with a fair and balanced story, so don’t oversell your company, product, or service.
Following Up After the Interview
The infographic is in a checklist format, so you can make sure that after the interview, you remember to make necessary clarifications and correct misinformation.
Keep this checklist, and with practice, you’ll be able to overcome your fear and know exactly what to do and say with confidence.
